마이크 폼페오 국무장관은 북한이 미국과의 관계 정상화를 통해 경제 성장을 이룬 베트남의 길을 따르길 바란다고 말했습니다.

일본에서 열린 미-한-일 외교장관 회담 후, 베트남에 도착한 폼페오 장관은 ‘경제 리셉션 행사’에 참석해 북한에 전하고 싶은 메시지가 있다면서 이 같이 전했습니다.

[폼페오 장관] “President Trump believes your country can replicate this path. It’s yours if you’ll seize the moment. The miracle could be yours; it can be your miracle in North Korea as well. The United States has been clear about what we seek from North Korea to set in motion this great chain of events. The choice now lies with North Korea and its people. If they’re able to do this, they will be remembered and Chairman Kim will be remembered as a hero of the Korean people.”

폼페오 장관은 김정은 위원장에게 전할 메시지가 있다며, 트럼프 대통령은 북한이 베트남이 걸어온 길을 모방(replicate)할 수 있다고 믿는다고 말했습니다. 김 위원장이 그런 기회를 잡는다면 ‘기적’은 그의 것이 될 수 있고, 또 북한에서 그의 기적이 될 수 있다는 겁니다.

이어 선택은 이제 북한과 북한인들에게 달려있다며, 그들이 이 일을 할 수 있다면 그들과 김 위원장은 국민의 영웅으로 기억될 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.

아울러 지난 1995년 베트남은 작지만 의미 있는 첫 걸음으로 미국과 공식 수교를 맺었고, 이는 베트남과 미국의 관계를 발전시켰다며, 미국은 언제가 북한과도 같은 관계를 맺길 바란다고 말했습니다.

[폼페오 장관] “The small but incredibly meaningful first step eventually helped lead to better ties and formal reestablishment of our relationship in 1995. I hope that the United States, that one day we can share the same relationship with North Korea. We know it’s a real possibility because we see how Vietnam has traveled this remarkable path.”
